Why am I tired all the time?
If, like a vast portion of the adult Australian population, you’ve found yourself asking this question – whether as you drag yourself up in the morning, whilst reaching for the day’s third coffee, or when struggling through an afternoon meeting – you’ll know the frustration perpetual tiredness and fatigue can cause. And by no means are you alone – in fact, it’s become such a common reason for GP visits that Doctors have given the condition a name – “TATT” (Tired All The Time).
Various studies have told us for decades that we need a decent six to eight hours’ sleep per night to function healthily and feel energised throughout the day. But what about when we do give ourselves ample shut-eye, only to feel as though we may as well not have bothered? If you’re feeling tired as you go about your days, regardless to the amount of sleep you managed the night before – you’ve already taken the best first step – asking yourself why.
Your tiredness may be due to a number of factors – let’s explore what these could be.
Firstly, let’s take a look at lifestyle factors. Your tiredness may not be due to any major physical health concerns, but instead the result of aspects of your life that are taking their toll on your general wellness. The first and most obvious, of course – is lack of sleep. Bouts of insomnia are experienced by around 1 in 3 adults at some point in their lifetime. If you do need some help sleeping, herbal remedies can be and effective natural alternative to pharmaceuticals. Our Sleep Plex tonic combines Passion Flower, Skullcap Leaf and Ashwagandha root, to act as an effective natural sleep aid.
You may be burning the candle at both ends due to work or home life requirements, or it may just be that you are not giving yourself the amount of sleeping hours you uniquely require. While we can do our best to follow ‘suggested’ sleep requirements, it’s undeniable some of us just need a few more hours than others to function happily. Some adults may need as many as 10 hours sleep to really feel properly refreshed – so where possible, take the time for yourself, attempt to clock in some extra hours, and see if you notice a difference.
Stress and anxiety also have a big part to play in this. If you’re going through a particularly stressful time in life, or are experiencing a lack of normality and routine your body may manifest stress into feelings of general exhaustion, and your sleeping patterns may also be affected. Often light, interrupted sleep can feel just as useless as no sleep at all! A variety of natural herbs such as St John’s Wort and Lemon Balm Leaf can be excellent plant-based remedies to help alleviate mood disturbances. These are core ingredients in our Stress Plex herbal medicines.
Another lifestyle factor that may be causing feelings of tiredness is your diet. Eating too little is a common cause of fatigue. If your body isn’t getting sufficient fats or carbohydrates to burn as energy, you’ll obviously have less energy to go around – and the drowsiness will set in.
Of course, your tiredness could well be due to physical health factors too, and there are a variety of common conditions that could be playing a role. Unrelenting exhaustion could be the result of something more serious such as anemia, fibromyalgia, or chronic fatigue syndrome, or even diabetes. You should also seek advice if you are taking pharmaceutical medications for another condition, as you could be experiencing tiredness an unwanted side effect.
Whether based on lifestyle factors, or something more serious, feeling fatigued can really take its toll on your ability to enjoy life and get the most out of your days. You may feel your only option is to reach for an array of chemicals or prescription medications in order to feel more energised and to combat ‘TATT’, but it’s important to be aware these aren’t your only options!
